Black holes are formed by the death of a massive star, much bigger than the Sun (at least 3 times bigger!). During the main period of the stars life, the star burns fuel in its core. The process of burning the fuel creates a pressure force that pushed outwards, which cancels out the force of gravity (which pulls things inwards). But, once this fuel runs out, the pressure force reduces, and gravity begins to win. The force of gravity makes the star collapse under its own weight, and it gets smaller and a lot more dense, until it forms a black hole.

I learned the theory of black holes in Maths. Have a look at this article to complement Hester’s answer – https://www.space.com/15421-black-holes-facts-formation-discovery-sdcmp.html
